What Is AI, and What Is Fine-Tuning?

February 3, 2026

A catch-up for anyone behind on the last 10+ years of AI — structured as Q&A.

What is AI? A broad field focused on instilling human intelligence into machines. Simply put: how can we give computers human-level reasoning? You’ve seen it — Tesla full self-driving, Google’s AI summary, Grammarly, email draft suggestions.

Why does it work? The trick is turning a huge amount of human writing into a training signal. You take text, convert it to tokens (numbers), and train a model to predict what comes next. Do that across enough text and the model picks up grammar, style, facts, and lightweight reasoning patterns.

So what is fine-tuning? Large language models are a massive collection of numbers — human knowledge compressed into weights. When you want a model to sound like your company, stay in a specific persona, or reliably follow your format, you fine-tune. You start with a large lab’s intelligent weights and make small, targeted adjustments — far cheaper than training from scratch, and you keep the core reasoning intact.

Fine-tuning is when you want the model to behave differently by default: your tone, your format, your rules, your character.
